Monthly Electrical Safety Call - February

Building on the momentum from earlier discussions, our February collaboration session brought together industry professionals to continue advancing collective progress across four priority electrical safety workstreams.

The session provided a forum for participants to explore practical applications, share industry experience, and discuss emerging regulatory requirements impacting electrical safety across both construction and operational environments.

Through open discussion and knowledge sharing, the session focused on identifying practical solutions, improving consistency in safety practices, and encouraging collaborative engagement across organisations.

Session Objectives

The February session aimed to:

  • Showcase innovative approaches and practical electrical safety tools

  • Explore anticipated regulatory developments and their potential impacts

  • Encourage industry collaboration and active participation to support actionable safety improvements

Workstream Discussions

Workstream 1: Commissioning (Cx) Transition & Turnover

There were no primary agenda items dedicated to this workstream during the session. However, participants were invited to share questions, insights, and lessons learned from previous commissioning and handover experiences to help inform future discussions.

Workstream 2: Unified Energy Control Plan (LOTO / ECP)

Participants discussed the evolving use of digital Lockout Tagout (LOTO) tools and their potential role in improving energy isolation management.

Key discussion points included:

  • Advantages and limitations of digital LOTO solutions

  • Suitability for construction environments compared with operational facilities

  • Opportunities to align digital tools with existing Energy Control Plan (ECP) practices

  • Considerations for future integration and standardisation

Workstream 3: Arc Flash & Electrical Hazard Management

This session included a detailed discussion on arc flash risk management and electrical hazard controls.

Topics covered included:

  • A presentation outlining a company’s arc flash labeling programme, including its development, rationale, and practical implementation

  • Early discussion around anticipated 2029 regulatory developments, including potential updates related to NFPA 70B and arc flash labeling requirements

  • Possible mandates affecting high-risk electrical equipment

  • Interactive dialogue on how regulatory changes could impact both construction activities and operational facilities

These discussions highlighted the importance of proactive preparation for evolving electrical safety requirements.
