EN ISO 13982-1: Protective clothing for use against solid particulates

EN ISO 13982-1 is the European standard for clothing that offers protection against solid particulates. Part 1 of this standard sets the minimum requirements for chemical protective clothing resistant to airborne solid particles, known as Type 5 clothing. These garments are full-body protective clothing, such as one or two-piece suits.

EN ISO 13982-1 Standard

EN ISO 13982-1 is the European standard for Type 5 full-body chemical protective clothing that offers protection against airborne solid particulates.

Part 1: Performance requirements for chemical protective clothing providing protection to the full body against airborne solid particulates - Type 5 clothing

The EN ISO 13982-1 standard

EN ISO 13982-1 is the European standard that specifies the minimum performance requirements for protective clothing providing protection to the full body against airborne solid particulates (Type 5 clothing). The garments certified for this standard must be full-body protective clothing, such as one or two-piece suits, with or without hood or visors, and with or without foot protection.

The latest version of this standard is EN 13892-1:2004 which was last reviewed and confirmed in 2024. This standard is only applicable to airborne solid particulates. It cannot be applied to other forms such as solid chemical products.

The requirements for component parts, such as hoods, gloves, boots, visors, or respiratory protective equipment, may be specified in other International and European Standards.

How Type 5 chemical protective clothing is categorised

Protective clothing is assigned a category based on the level of risk it can sufficiently protect against. These categories are regulated in the PPE Regulation EU 2016/425 and are applicable to all types of PPE.

There are three categories, as set by the PPE Regulation EU 2016/425, with category III being for chemical protective clothing that can protect against a high risk of airborne solid particulates.

Category I

Category 1 is for simple protective clothing that can be worn in environments where this is a low risk of airborne solid particulates.

Category II

Category II is for protective clothing that can protect the wearer against hazards other than those listed in categories I and III.

Category III

Category III is for protective clothing that can protect the wearer against potentially fatal hazards or severe and irreversible health problems.

Type 5 chemical protective clothing developed under the EN ISO 13982-1 standard must be produced and approved in accordance with Category III of the PPE Directive.
