9 ways to keep your PPE garments in top condition
As a Jointer, Linesman or an Electrical Engineer know that PPE garments are important, but do you know the steps you should be taking to ensure they continue to provide you with the maximum protection possible? If you’re unsure of how to keep you PPE in the best condition possible, these tips are perfect for you.
As PPE is the last barrier that provides you with protection, whether from arc flash or chemicals, maintenance should be considered a vital step. PPE that isn’t properly stored, cleaned, and maintained can become worn or damaged, increasing your chances of being vulnerable to a risk. Follow these tips to reduce that risk:
1. Regularly inspect for damage
Signs of damage should regularly be looked for, such as fraying, tears, and other signs you can spot with a quick look. You may be able to repair damage before it worsens but it some cases alternative PPE should be used.
2. Store in an appropriate place
PPE should be stored in a cool, dry place that’s away from direct sunlight. It should also be away from your regular clothing.
3. Always follow cleaning instructions
4. Keep on top of cleaning
5. Dry naturally
6. Check fit frequently
How PPE fits will affect its conditions and effectiveness. If you’ve noticed that your garments are becoming tighter or looser in places, ensure you assess whether they’re still able to provide the protection you need.
7. Discard after certain incidents
If you’ve had an incident while working in PPE it’s sometimes necessary to discard the items. For example, where the PPE has become irreparable.
8. Outsource when branding
9. Speak to your employer
If you’re unsure what you’re responsible for, the best place to start is with your employer. They should have a set of steps that you can follow for every day and infrequent maintenance that matches the equipment they provide.
